Hard Copy

The Story

Reading, on purpose.

The internet is good at delivering you to a page. It's bad at letting you sit there. The reading we actually want to do (long essays, deep reporting, the writers who shaped how we think) happens inside an environment engineered to interrupt us. Most of it gets skimmed, half-read, and forgotten.

Hard Copy started with a simple premise: take the things you actually want to read, lift them out of that environment, and hand them back as something physical. A printed book you can sit with, mark up, and finish. Reading without the feed.

That premise didn't have a product behind it yet. It needed one. We took on the entire build: software, brand, books, launch. Everything required to turn an idea into a real business that someone could use the day it went live.

What We've Built

Everything a launch requires.

We built the engine at the center of the product: automated scraping that pulls the article or essay you want to read, cleans it, and assembles a print-ready PDF formatted to look like a book, not a webpage. Everything from text reflow to image handling to chapter breaks happens without manual intervention.

We designed and built the web app that customers actually touch: submitting URLs, curating their reading list, customizing their book, and ordering. The interface had to feel as considered as the product itself.

We developed the full identity (name treatment, logo, color, typography, voice) for a brand that needed to stand for slowness, intention, and craft in a market full of noise. The brand had to feel like the product: deliberate, well-made, and worth your time.

The output of the product is a physical book, so the design of the book itself was a deliverable. We built the cover system and the interior typographic framework (typefaces, layout, the rhythm of the page) so every book Hard Copy produces reads and feels like a real publication.

We produced the photography that anchors the brand across the website, marketing, and packaging. Imagery that does the work of communicating what the product is and why it matters before a single word is read.

We built the launch and growth plan: positioning, channel strategy, content, and the campaigns that would carry Hard Copy from quiet launch into a working business. A go-to-market plan grounded in who this product is actually for and how to find them.

The Results

A product. A brand. A business.

What got launched is what got built: a product that works, a brand that holds together, and the operational shape of a real business. The software runs. The books are real. The website looks and reads like the kind of thing the product is asking you to slow down for.

More than the artifacts, what we delivered is a starting line. A launchable, sellable, recognizable thing where there used to be a premise. From here, Hard Copy is a business that can grow.
